Uzbek wood carving

Playing a significant role in the architectural decoration of Uzbekistan, wood carving also widely used in the manufacturing of household goods, stands, chests for folding blankets, small lockers, boxes, pencil boxes, elegant low tables, national musical instruments, as well as decorative multifaceted tables, cupboards, which were in great demand among the European population in the second half of the XIX and early XX centuries. In ornamental flat-relief carving among all the richness and variety of drawings, masters can recognize three basic composition style groups: “Baghdadi”, “Islimi” and “Pargori”.

Each group is characterized by its ornamental motifs and compositional construction, carving techniques and the effects of patterned relief. In Uzbekistan wood carving uses the best breed of walnut, plane tree, elm, juniper, mulberry tree, poplar, apricot tree and other. Today local masters also use imported sort of woods, mainly beech, oak and pine. Modern Uzbek wood carving includes all kinds of multi-faceted and round tables, stools, screens, tables, frames, and boxes.
